Banks Foils Hurst As Potters Triumph
This semi-final was an epic that took FOUR games to separate the rivals. When two World Cup heroes clashed in the final minute of extra-time in the second leg, Gordon Banks brilliantly saved a penalty from Geoff Hurst.
In the fourth match West Ham goalkeeper Bobby Ferguson was injured early and so Bobby Moore went in goal. A concussed Ferguson later returned but could not prevent Stoke from reaching their first major final.
At Wembley, Stoke defeated a Chelsea side boasting the likes of Peter Bonetti, Ron Harris, John Hollins, Peter Osgood, David Webb and Alan Hudson to win the Potters first, and only, major trophy to date. The winning goal was scored by George Eastham, who at the age of 35 years and 161 days, became the oldest player to receive a winner’s medal.
