Clough’s Champagne Moment Does The Trick

Clough’s Champagne Moment Does The Trick

The night before the 1979 final, Forest manager Brian Clough ordered his players to meet in a side room for a special team talk.

They allegedly found their manager sitting next to a crate of champagne, who then locked the door and told them nobody was going to bed before it was drunk.

Although not explained, assistant Peter Taylor lead Forest out. Southampton led at half-time, at which point Clough showed his face, popping his head round the dressing room door. Forest’s players responded with two goals from Garry Birtles and another from Tony Woodcock to secure a famous 3-2 win.
