Sunderland In Seven Heaven
In September 1979 Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in the second round, but were in seventh heaven when they thrashed them 7-0 at Highbury in the second leg.
The star of the game was Alan Sunderland, the Arsenal striker who had netted in the recent FA Cup final success over Manchester United.
Sunderland scored a hat-trick while Liam Brady netted two penalties to claim the Gunners’ best ever League Cup win - and Leeds their heaviest defeat since 1966.
Leeds manager Jimmy Adamson was honest: “Arsenal were magic, we were rubbish.”
