Gray Day For Clough

Nottingham Forest were the team to beat in the late 70s and early 80s, with Brian Clough master of all he surveyed. Forest arrived at Wembley for the 1980 final as current holders, not to mention the champions of Europe.

Forest went on to retain the European Cup that season – but they failed to keep hold of the League Cup when John Barnwell’s Wolves, inspired by goalkeeper Paul Bradshaw, scored the only goal of the game when, in the 67th minute, a long ball upfield by Peter Daniel created confusion in the Forest defence, as Dave Needham and Peter Shilton collided, leaving Andy Gray with the simplest of chances.

It meant that Wolves captain Emlyn Hughes completed the achievement of having won every major domestic honour during his career.
