Saints Stung By Hornets Comeback

When Southampton won 4-0 at the Dell in a second round tie in the 1980-81 campaign, the second leg appeared a mere formality. Not so.

Southampton were missing England captain Kevin Keegan and by half-time Watford were 2-0 up through Malcolm Poskett and Ray Train. The Hornets then cut the deficit further with a goal from Martin Patching in the 67th minute.

An own goal gave Saints hope but within a minute Watford had wiped that out when Ian Bolton converted a penalty. And with 10 minutes to go Ross Jenkins levelled the aggregate score. Extra-time goals from Nigel Callaghan and Poskett made it 7-1 and 7-5 on aggregate.
