In 1986, the final may not have been fashionable, but it contained goals, excitement, a shock and sentiment.

Oxford United had been managed with great success by Jim Smith but he decided to leave, for QPR the previous summer and, as luck would have it, his chance to win a trophy came against the team he built.

Oxford dominated with goals from Trevor Hebberd, Ray Houghton and former Rangers striker Jeremy Charles. At full-time Manager Maurice Evans shunned the limelight, insisting that Ken Fish, the club’s veteran physio, went up the famous steps to collect the medal.
