Ince Hammers Reds

Paul Ince was the West Ham hero when he scored twice to help condemn reigning League Champions Liverpool to their heaviest defeat in more than 40 years on a memorable Upton Park night.

Steve Staunton’s own goal in a fourth round tie at Upton Park in 1988 had put West Ham three-up. Tony Gale completed the 4-1 rout and they went on to reach the semi-finals, before losing to Luton.

Liverpool got their revenge, winning 5-1 at Anfield in the final game of the season – and legendary Hammers manager John Lyall lost his job.
