Minstermen Stun Red Devils
In 1995 York – rated at a massive 20-1 to win this game by the bookies – overcame a United side including Ryan Giggs, Gary Pallister and David Beckham.
Paul Barnes opened the scoring for City and added a second from the penalty spot.
United goalkeeper Pat McGibbon was sent-off following the move that led to the penalty and, after Tony Barras added a third, York survived the dismissal of Paul Baker to take a three goal lead into the second leg.
United went on to win 3-1 at Bootham Crescent but Scott Jordan’s goal took the Minstermen through.
